Getting to Wellington
Air New Zealand and
Qantas fly directly to
Wellington International Airport from Melbourne and Sydney, and
Virgin Australia flies from Brisbane. The flight across the Tasman take about three hours. If you are flying internationally to Wellington from somewhere other than the east coast of Australia, you are likely to pass through
Auckland Airport.
Transport
This site can be used to calculate approximate taxi fares. A taxi from the airport to the Rydges hotel or to the university will cost about $30 or $35. A
shuttle from the airport could be significantly less, if you are travelling with others. If you want to find others to share a ride with, then use this
online poll. If you don't know the contact details of people who will be arriving at the same time,
email to get them.
If you want to catch public transport from the airport, then get on the
Airport Flyer. To get to the Rydges hotel, depart the bus at the end of Lambton Quay. To get to the university, change buses at Courtenay Place. You should get on the
Number 23 going towards Mairangi and then depart the bus at the top of Kelburn Parade.
This map shows public transport locations.
The
Metlink site contains further information about public transport.
Those who are staying at Rydges, or elsewhere downtown, may want to catch the
cable car up the hill to the university.
Visiting Wellington
The
Absolutely Positively Wellington site contains guides to restaurants, bars, shops, and activities.
Visitor highlights in Wellington include the national museum,
Te Papa; the
Museum of City & Sea; the
City Art Gallery; the
Botanic Gardens, and the
Weta Workshop Tour.
Weather
Weather in Wellington can be unpredictable. Think about bringing warm clothes and a rain jacket, especially if you are going on the
excursion to Zealandia. You will also need good walking shoes for the excursion. If you are from the northern hemisphere, then be aware that there can be as much as
40% more UV light in New Zealand than in comparable northern latitudes. Please be careful and wear sunscreen.

Car parking
There is a very small number of car parks for conference attendees, available on request from the
organiser. We may not be able to satisfy every request, and priority will be given to out-of-town attendees.
