STAT 231: Statistics

Prerequisites: MATH 113, 114 and STAT 131, or a comparable background in Mathematics and Statistics approved by the Head of School. Note: STAT 193 or QUAN 102 will usually be recognised as comparable to STAT 131;
Restrictions: QUAN 201 and 203
Lectures: Mon Tue 11-12, Thu Fri 11-12 timetable
Tutorials: 1 hour per week, to be arranged
Assessment: 15% course work (assignments), 15% from term test, 70% from final exam.
Course Materials: An Introduction to R (from Student Notes), cost approximately $10. A suitable scientific calculator, cost approximately $25.
Prescription: Probability; random variables and their distribution, statistics.
Description: Topics will be chosen from: revision of basic probability theory; introduction to random variables, distributions and expectation; joint distributions, correlation and distributions of linear combinations of random variables; introduction to estimation and hypothesis testing, mainly with respect to sampling from a normal population; nonparametric methods; one-way analysis of variance; linear regression; goodness of fit tests and contingency tables.
