MATH 434: Set Theory

2009 Trimester 2

MATH 434 CRN 7675, 15 Points (2009 2/3)
Coordinator: Dr Colin Bailey
Description: Set theory lies at the foundations of mathematics - all objects of mathematical interest can be construed as sets. Contemporary set theory explores some of the rich structure of the class of all sets, and the limitations of the theory. We will consider one small model of set theory as a base point. And we will consider the method of forcing - used to modify existing models and so obtain limitative results. The course uses ideas from MATH 309, but is not a strict continuation of that course. There is no set text, but many texts on set theory may be found in the library.
