Abstract

This is a live streaming of the public lecture broadcast from the University of Auckland. There will be food and drink from 6pm prior to the lecture start at 6.30pm.

In this talk, I will discuss major trends and areas of work in the broader “data science tools” software ecosystem across Python, R, Julia, and other programming languages. I will explain my journey from starting the Python pandas project to cocreating Apache Arrow and becoming an open source software entrepreneur. In addition I will highlight some of the areas likely to see significant development and change in the coming years, along with speculation about the future of the ecosystem.

Wes McKinney is a software developer and entrepreneur focusing on data science tools and analytical computing. He created thePython pandas project and is a co-creator of Apache Arrow. He authored three editions of the reference book, Python for DataAnalysis. Wes is a member of The Apache Software Foundation and also a PMC member for Apache Parquet. He is now theCTO and co-founder of Voltron Data, a new startup working on accelerated computing technologies powered by Apache Arrow.
