Abstract

Professor Geoffrey Grimmett (University of Cambridge) is the 2012 LMS/NZMS Forder Lecturer.

"Always be a little improbable" [Wilde]

Probability theory is a mature area of mathematics that was developed largely in France using the language of gambling. Why did we bother? The role of modern probability will be discussed and illustrated with many examples from "real life", including gambling, parenthood, and the sinking of the Titanic.

"This branch of mathematics is the only one, I believe, in which good writers frequently get results which are entirely erroneous." [Peirce]
