This is the first of three lectures in a minicourse introducing finite fields- their definition, construction, and key properties- as well as their algebraic closure, p-adic numbers, and matrix groups defined over p-adic fields. The minicourse is intended for a general mathematics audience, and postgraduate mathematics students are especially encouraged to attend.
