Work Integrated Learning through Internships

Studying at our university offers exciting opportunities to integrate work-related learning and industry engagement into your degree. Consolidate your academic learning, enhance your ability to transition into the workforce, and create your own networks and connections in a Data Science or Applied Statistics career through our Internship courses: DATA 351, DATA 581 and STAT 581. Completing the internships will enhance your ability to transition into the workforce through practical experience in a work environment at one of our host organisations. DATA 351 Course information

DATA 351 is an undergraduate 15-point course which is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Information on the timetable, assessment, and dates for DATA 351 can be found on Course Finder. The course is limited entry, and only students in the Data Science undergraduate programme can apply.

This course consists of the internship placement (100 hours) workshops, assignments and a presentation. The assignments and presentation are where you’ll reflect on, share, and discuss what you have learned in the workplace. For advice on fitting this course into your programme of study, contact your student advisor in your faculty office.

How to apply

DATA 351 is a limited entry course. To apply for entry, enrol in the course by 1 December. Your name will then go on a waiting list. All applications will be considered and selections made after 1 December.

DATA/STAT 581 Course Information

DATA 581 and STAT 581 are post-graduate 30-point courses which are assessed on a pass/fail basis. Information on the timetable, assessment, and dates for these course can be found on Course Finder. This course consists of the internship placement (200 hours), a workshop, assignments and a presentation. The assignments and presentation are where you’ll reflect on, share, and discuss what you have learned in the workplace.

How to apply

DATA 581 and STAT 581 are restricted only to students taking the relevant taught masters degree. Students in the Master of Data Science enrol in DATA 581 and students in the Master of Applied Statistics enrol in STAT 581. To enrol in either course, you must also be enrolled in the relevant masters programme. By the time you start the course you need to have completed at least 60 approved points at 400-level or above. Apply for entry at least two trimesters before you intend to take the course to allow time for an internship to be arranged.

Your internship

The course coordinator will work with you to identify a suitable placement for your internship. You will then work with your host to create a plan for the placement. The course coordinator will provide support and advice throughout your internship placement. During your time at your host organisation, you will be working on a range of tasks with guidance from your mentor. In your assignments and presentation, you will reflect on your progress and the work you are doing.
