Careers in Focus - Mathematics and Statistics Session - 23 Jul 2019 5:30pm - 7:30 pm
Careers in Focus is a series of events focused on specific Faculties and Departments within Victoria University of Wellington. Students get the chance to meet graduates from their chosen disciplines who are now out in the workforce. These graduates share their career stories giving students more confidence and inspiration about the variety of career pathways availiable.
For Mathematics and Statistics, the event has a discussion panel followed by a networking session. The discussion panel covers a range of backgrounds - from data science, to financial mathematics, to statistics & modelling and logic based pure mathematics (as well as everything in between). This panel allows graduatess to highlight the work they have been doing, their goals for their future careers and how they apply their skills from their degree to their careers. Attending students get the chance to submit questions to panelists and a Q&A session. The second half of the evening is a networking session with nibbles. Employers interested in mathematics and statistics graduates pop along for an informal discussion with students. This gives students an opportunity to see what skills the workforce is looking for while also checking out where the workforce is taking mathematics and statistics.
